A Screeching Halt

We "Yankees" always joke about the weather down here in NC. I mean, we all grew up driving in snow. Snow days are only called once buses get stuck a couple times. After all, if you can't get out of the way of the salt truck that's your problem, right? :)

Yesterday, as I watched the weather report, I noticed they called for a "wintery mix" Thursday morning. My friend, Loren (who is from San Diego) was thinking we might not have school. "Well, if they're right and it turns to rain by 9, then we'll be here," I told him. "Even still, I wouldn't mind a 2 hour delay or even a snow day," I finished wistfully. As we walked around the track at school during recess I lingered on the thought that having to make up school in a year round situation isn't so bad. We go to school on a Saturday to make it up (probably a week after this) and it's a half day, plus- half my kids usually don't show. Not too bad! But the realist in me started listing all the times I got my hopes up. So, last night I dutifully went to bed around 10:30 and got a nice night's rest.

I woke up to this:

Yet, when I checked the news, Wake County wasn't listed as "closed" and I was puzzled. I checked the school's web page: nothing. "Fine," I though, "I guess it isn't so bad after all...might as well get in the shower." You know, after I dried my hair and checked again school was canceled! Of course. Figures.

I'd be mad, but my car looks like this:

This is nothing compared to the "dig outs" I've done back in Michigan. Even still, I don't relish the idea of scraping and then going to school to listen to my kids complain about being at school and how cold it is and how cool the snow is and how they can't focus or work. So, school, thankfully, is closed!

Who says wishes don't come true?
